London North Eastern Railway is a British train operating company that operates the InterCity East Coast franchise. LNER operates long-distance inter-city services on the East Coast Main Line, which runs from London Kings Cross to North East England and Scotland. Previously Virgin Trains East Coast.
LNER (London North Eastern Railway) approached Make Events to produce their annual awards for 190 employees. We have done these awards for the company for the past 3 years when they were under the name Virgin Trains East Coast.
The aim of the awards was to motivate, congratulate and reward LNER employees for their work throughout the year. Make Events were chosen to take the event from idea to completion. As we had produced this event for them before, we were able to ensure continuity and LNER knew that we would deliver as we truly understand their brand.
The challenge here was creating something that they hadn’t seen before and bringing their new brand to life.
Make Events managed the Venue Find for the event, it was important that the venue was situated on the East Coast Main Line, was close to accommodation and a train station. Harrogate Convention Centre was chosen as it was a blank canvas to dress and ticked all of the above boxes.
Make Events Venue Finding team arranged the accommodation for all nominees and sponsors.
As last years’ awards were quite industrial and urban, we wanted to juxtapose this and look into the future with ‘the speed of light’.
This year The Azuma train was launched. As this was created in Japan, it gave us the opportunity to pull inspiration from the east for this event.
As guests arrived at the venue, they were greeted by a gin truck serving all guests. Drink in hand, guests walked through a dark tunnel which was lined with LED batons directing them into the drink’s reception. As they got to the end of the tunnel, blossom trees stood either side alongside LNER baton letters and an LED circular bar. VIPs, nominees and sponsors were welcome to arrive an hour earlier than the remainder of the guests and entertained by LNER employee singer, Bernadette.
To split the main space and the drinks reception, we constructed a gauze projection across the room which had the LNER logo projected onto it. This meant there was a big reveal of the main space when there was a kabuki drop.
To play on the idea of ‘the speed of light’ we used long rectangular tables all in one direction, these were decorated with LED batons in the brand colours. To compliment this, the stage was in an arrow shape in the same direction.
Make Events did a tasting with Harrogate Convention Centre to narrow down the catering for the evening. The theme was ‘From East to Far East’ where we incorporated different locations that you would make on this journey,
To kick off the awards, an impactful video was shown about LNER and the new Azuma train, Make Events managed the production of this.
Make Events managed all of the screen content for the awards, as well as all the design and print of their invites, table plans, winners’ cards and brochures.
The entertainment was the outstanding RPJ Band, fronted by the late Status Quo artist Rick Parfitt’s son.
Everything ran to the minute and the event was a great success. We kept in line with the theme and the identity was carried through the whole event. We look forward to working with LNER again.
